Encourage Insects into your Garden

Writer: Gill WattsGill Watts

Many of us have enjoyed pottering in our gardens over the last year, and this year we could encourage more insects into our green spaces.

Insects are a vital part of the ecosystem and there is concern at their reducing numbers. Whatever the size of our gardens we could give a boost to biodiversity:

- add plants - like lavender - that attract insects like bees. And value those dandelions!

- add water with a small pond or a large pot (ensure safety if children use the garden)

- allow a part of the garden to grow wild

- leave a pile of leaves and twigs in a corner of the garden.

- avoid using chemicals.

And enjoy the diversity of bees, butterflies and helpful bugs that will come to visit.
