Methodism,
we are told, was ‘born in song’. This may be so, but sometimes,
congregations need a bit of help and encouragement when singing
unfamiliar hymns or songs. This support is one of the prime
functions of the Grangewood Choir. We provide choral support at
Sunday morning services and practise the hymns at the choir rehearsal
on the preceding Thursday to ensure that we, at least, are familiar
with them and can offer descants if appropriate. We also offer
other choral music, both accompanied and unaccompanied, at
services.
Our associations with the Methodist Church Music Society and the Royal
School of Church Music provides us with access to a wide range of
choral music from the 16th century right up to the present day.
The Iona Community is a very useful source of contemporary music, as is
the RSCM, with good arrangements of modern worship songs. The
high spots of the church year – Christmas, Easter, Harvest Festival and
Remembrance Day provide us with the chance to contribute more
substantial works. New members are always welcome, and a modest
ability to read music will ensure you do not have to struggle to keep
up with our more experienced singers. For those who are still improving
their sight reading or not able to attend
all rehearsals, MP3 files of music currently being rehearsed are
available enabling them to practice at home and sing with confidence at
services.
We meet for rehearsals on Thursdays at 7.45 p.m. in
Grangewood Church.
